SME’s Greater Charleston Chapter 430 strives to be the best it can be within SME and within its local community. It’s been challenging to continue to be at the platinum level (for the fourth year in a row); however, the chapter is fortunate to have committed chapter officers and members who support its overall mission and vision.
Chapter 430’s Mission
To acquire and distribute quality manufacturing knowledge among its members as well as the broader community resulting in increased interest and improved manufacturing skill base in the area. We also desire to support our Charleston area youth in their knowledge and awareness of manufacturing as a viable career option.
Chapter 430’s Vision
To gain recognition as the premier source for manufacturing knowledge, education and networking in the Greater Charleston, South Carolina, region. We intend to be the primary conduit for bridging the knowledge gap and desire among Charleston area youth for fulfilling careers in manufacturing.
According to Chapter 430 chair, Dick Tiano, “To accomplish the chapter’s mission and vision, especially the part related to supporting youth and bridging the skills gap, the chapter has to continue to provide meaningful presentations and tours on a regular basis.” This not only helps the youth, but it keeps the chapter connected with the local industry and community service activities. In addition, the chapter provides at least one presentation or tour monthly. It also stays active by serving the local Charleston community through Habitat for Humanity and various foodbank opportunities. The chapter also focuses heavily on supporting its local schools and will continue that focus during the remainder of this year.
The chapter currently provides sponsorships to 15 schools. These schools must be active in a STEM program and participate in First Lego League, First Robotics, VEX or First Tech Challenge. Chapter 430 plans to increase its sponsorships this year in two ways: Increasing the amount of funding and the number of schools it sponsors. The chapter also provides scholarship funds to the Charleston Engineering Council, which offers scholarships to local high school students.
To support its fundraising endeavors, the chapter holds an annual golf event. Now in its sixth year, the chapter has raised $8,800. Eighty percent of these funds will go back out to the schools and will also be used to fund scholarships. Charleston Chapter 430 will continue the golf outing because it raises awareness about the chapter itself, promotes fellowship, brings the community together and, of course, it raises funds.
Part of Chapter 430’s success has been its connection to other chapters. It freely shared its plans with several other chapters on how to achieve platinum status for SME’s Annual Chapter Recognition Award.
According to Tiano, “As chapter chair, I take the stance that the more I can share, learn and use, everyone benefits. This is not about me or one chapter, it is about a community of chapters working with SME to make us all better.”Congratulations Chapter 430!#EducationandTraining #RoboticsandAutomation
