Chairman's Message

Welcome everyone, to the new SME MINNESOTA Chapter 11! We’ve been planning for months and it is now official. Member rosters for Minneapolis 11, Southern Minnesota 162 and St. Paul 172 are combined into Minnesota 11. Rather than re-invent the wheel, we are continuing Minneapolis’ Tool Bits publication for member communication. The format, advertising and volunteers are able to continue with minimal disruption. We welcome constructive feedback for continuous improvement, especially if you can commit some time and expertise to help enact the changes!

Some have questioned retaining number 11 for the chapter. It was decided the low number carries some prestige within SME with only Detroit (#1), Kenosha, Cleveland, Milwaukee, Chicago, Hartford, Pittsburgh and Buffalo coming before us. It was also much easier to resolve finances, rosters and other things governed in the By-Laws of SME International.

Given the wider geographic spread of our membership, some things must change. Committee meetings will allow remote log-in and we will strive to have more member events outside the metro area. We need everyone’s help in securing top-quality, exciting programs throughout the state. Suggestions, contacts and assistance from all members is critical to our success!

Ross Paulson, Scott Brandt and Tim Lange are co-chairing the chapter through December 2017. Chair-elect, Treasurer and Secretary are being handled similarly. For 2018, we need some “new blood”. I’m sure you’ve noticed executive positions rotating among a small group for the past few years. These positions are meant to be transitional, starting at Secretary, promoting each year until achieving the most coveted position, “Past Chair”. If you need to improve leadership skills, this does it. If you have leadership skills, we all benefit. And frankly, “Active officer and volunteer” speaks more on your resume than “Member”. If you’ve been a member for a number of years, it’s an opportunity to ‘give back’. Every current board member is keen to ‘give back’ by mentoring future board members. We will still be engaged. Per the By-Laws, nominations are accepted for at least two member meetings before elections. We hope to see some hands go up!

Thank you,

Tim Lange, Ross Paulson, Scott Brandt
