Chairman's message

Chair Message

Wow, where has the summer gone.  As I type today the temperature has dropped from the mid 90 to the upper 60s.  It must be time for the Central Iowa SME Chapter meetings to begin.  We have had a lot of requests to see and hear about Additive Manufacturing.  It was the darling of Wall Street last year and generating a considerable amount of talk.  Let me be one of the first to let you know,  it is not going to replace traditional manufacturing.  Additive Manufacturing has considerable benefits to areas where a weight savings or design constraints will allow for an added cost.  Jim Ready with Renishaw will visit with us to discuss the process and applications for a laser sintering system.   Many of you may know Jim as he has been the Renishaw guy assigned to Iowa for years.  Jim has been assigned the task of Additive Manufacturing Representative with Renishaw and will give us considerable insight to additive manufacturing with metal.

New Product Development Engineer

Company Description

Summit Products is in the business of developing and manufacturing specialized products for customers across the continent.  From RV accessories to ATV brake guards, agricultural seed planter components to hospital counter tops, the team at Summit Products covers a wide market with a variety of services. The culture supports innovation and teamwork by minimizing the management with a few good leaders and a fair bonus program.  This is not the place to be if you don’t care to be productive.

We treat our people with respect and offer competitive compensation and outstanding benefits, such as medical and dental coverage, life insurance, ADD insurance and tuition assistance.

Job Description

Your job is to help grow the business.  This starts by researching the product background, develop prototypes, test the prototypes and get them to a stage when they can be reviewed by customers.  A standalone R&D shop with access to lasers, press brakes, welding equipment, a powder coating paint line, and group of talented co-workers are at your disposal.  Familiarity with all of these manufacturing processes is expected, if not initially, then at least after a few months at our company.

The right person has grown up with a natural curiosity to wonder how things work, to take engines apart, to weld a tractor fender back in place, to fail miserably time after time, but continue to get up and try again.  You may work with LED lights, pneumatic cylinders, powdered metallurgy gears, rapid prototyped plastic linkages, and 24 volt DC motors all in the course of a single week.  The right person for this job is not a perfectionist, but one that can see where the product will be with further refinement.

Desired Skills and Expertise
