April was a big month for SME Chapter 80! First we joined the student chapter for a tour and tasting at Flix Brewhouse at the Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines. Head Brewer Mike Gauthier was very knowledgeable and generous in sharing (almost) everything he knows about brewing. He has a few recipes that he doesn’t share.
The next week we met with the Society of Women Engineers for a joint meeting of Danfoss in Ames. We learned how they use state of the art techniques to produce transmissions for a variety of powered equipment like tractors and skid loaders. One highlight for me was the chamber they have that instantly burns off tiny jagged burrs from machined housings.
Our thanks to the students and faculty that set up the Flix tour and to Harry Mundt and all the people at Danfoss who made that tour possible.
In May we plan to meet for a tour of RCS Millwork (rcsmillwork.com) south of Ankeny. RCS has two facilities. The other is in Kansas City. They are in their 51st year and they do beautiful large woodworking projects for commercial buildings, churches, athletic facilities and the like. We hope to see you there.
