ABB Plant Tour

Published
SME Chapter 182 and UNC Charlotte Career Trek Program partnered to plan a facility tour of the ABB plant in Kings Mountain, NC on December 6th. The Career Trek is a one-day opportunities designed to highlight a specific company or organization. The December 6th ABB Trek focused on engineering and engineering technology, was one half-day long, during which student participants receive a tour and an overview of ABB.  Students were able to speak with employees from various departments about their specific roles and potential career paths for engineers.

The event was outstanding!  Brent McManis provided an excellent overview of ABB's various products, services and global locations.  The midday event included a delicious lunch with dessert followed by informative plant tours covering everything from receiving to shipping. ABB HR Manager, Ray Hauser gave the thirteen students from the William States Lee College of Engineering, key tips to improve hiring process success.

There was clearly enthusiasm and interest in ABB among the students in attendance. The hands-on nature of the various engineering and engineering technology programs offered by the Lee College of Engineering, make graduates well-suited for the work performed by ABB engineers. Two engineer's onsite during the Career Trek were UNC Charlotte graduates.  Perhaps by joining this SME tour, one or more students in attendance will get an employment opportunities within ABB's global organization.

I look forward to future SME collaborations with ABB's Kings Mountain and Shelby sites in the years to come.
