Friday Evening Sept 28, East Los Angeles College hosted a Manufacturing Day Celebration attended by students, faculty, association members and professionals. The event was kicked off with introductions all around and then ELAC students presented a project on Hydro, Aero and Aquaponics, comparing cost benefit elements from all while discussing the process or creating this study. There was a very lively question and answer session to follow up the presentation.
A quick breaker for a very lovely dinner and they one of the professionals, Dave Rosenfield (also a member of SME 233), was invited to show off an invention of Nicola Tesla, the Tesla Coil. This presentation started with a brief discussion about Tesla, his vision and his gift, his dream of coming to America to meet and perhaps work with his hero, Thomas Edison, a dream which became a reality. Students we shown that Tesla became a prolific inventor and changed the world with his inventions.
Finally with the little Tesla Coil was energized, it received plenty of "Oohs" and "Aahs". The line of students and faculty to operate the coil took some time to get through and fortunately, the finicky homemade coil functioned properly the whole time. We were lucky. The meeting concluded with a “photo op” session so we could save the memories of a nicely produced evening completely organized and prepared by the students. Thanks for the invite!
