Event Description:

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) South LA/ Orange County Chapter 233 conducted the third technology talk event for the year 2021 on Friday, March 26th, from 2:45 PM - 3:45 PM (PST). The event was conducted virtually via the Zoom platform. The topic for this tech talk was ‘Metal Additive Manufacturing: Advances, Challenges, and Opportunities’ presented by Dr. Mohsen Eshraghi, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at California State University, Los Angeles. Dr. Eshraghi is also serving as the Director of the Materials Science and Engineering program at California State University, Los Angeles. His research interests are in the areas of Materials Science and Additive Manufacturing. He is the Director of the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Laboratory (AM2L|AM2L.com). AM2L focuses on Additive Manufacturing (AM) and Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME). 

This virtual tech talk event was open to all the members of SME Chapter 233, which includes industry professionals, students, educators, researchers, and other manufacturing enthusiasts in the SoCal region. During the event, Dr. Eshraghi discussed some of the advances in the area of metal additive manufacturing, along with challenges and opportunities. The talk focused on understanding various aspects of metal additive manufacturing, including the material microstructures, defect formation, and proper adjustment of process parameters to achieve the properties required for the intended applications. Dr. Sagil James (Chair, SME Chapter 233) and Kamy Khashayar (Chair-Elect, SME Chapter 233) were the hosts and coordinated the event activities. The event also included a Q&A discussion session that allowed audiences to interact with Dr. Eshraghi and learn more about metal additive manufacturing technologies.
