A Valuable Partnership: Student And Professional Members

Published
In late July, SME’s longtime award-winning platinum chapter, Greater Charleston Chapter 430, was presented with a unique opportunity: Hosting an international student chapter member!

After notifying members of its co-located SME/ASQ chapter event, Chapter 430 received a surprising response from SME student member Comardo Roofe: He wanted to attend their upcoming event!

Chapter 430, which began sponsoring the University of Technology, Jamaica S430 in 2017, is currently the only U.S.-based professional chapter sponsoring an international student chapter. Comardo, who served as the student chapter’s first vice president, played an important role in the chapter’s establishment at the university.

According to UTech JA chapter’s faculty advisor, Junior Bennett, CMfgE, CMfgT, PE, “Comardo has continued to make us proud through his hard work and academic performance. He is an outstanding final year student from the Industrial Engineering Programme.”

According to Chapter 430’s former chair, Dick Tiano, “Comardo was thrilled to meet his Chapter 430 counterparts, and we were equally thrilled to meet him. We often don’t engage with our student chapters like we should, and it’s certainly more difficult to meet someone from our international chapter. I encourage our professional chapter members to reach out to their student chapters and invite them to their events — It’s beneficial for everyone involved.”

Congrats Chapter 430 and UTech JA! Keep up the great work! 😊
