SME Metro Detroit Chapters Celebrate Milestone Anniversaries

Congratulations to Detroit Chapter 1, Oakland-Macomb Chapter 69 and Ann Arbor Chapter 79 for celebrating 85, 76 and 72 years, respectively, as SME chapters!

During SME's recent RAPID + TCT event in Detroit, these three longtime SME Metro Detroit chapters were recognized and celebrated for their longevity and ongoing volunteerism. Together, these chapters service close to 700 SME members within their local manufacturing communities, helping SME advance manufacturing and attract the next generation of manufacturing and engineering talent. 

On hand to be recognized during the ceremony were:

• Doug Wetzel, Chapter Chair, Ann Arbor Chapter 79 — Chapter 79 supports 158 active members 
• Farhad Ghadamli, CAM-F, Chapter Chair, Oakland-Macomb Chapter 69 — Chapter 69 is a platinum-level chapter with 389 active members
• Anwelli Okpue, Chapter Chair, Detroit Chapter 1 — Chapter 1, SME’s “founding chapter,” achieved gold status in 2021 and has 131 active members  

In addition to recognizing our three outstanding and very collaborative chapters, several longtime chapter officers received recognition for their many years of membership, volunteerism and support.

Detroit Chapter 1 members:

• Mike Timko, LSME, CMfgE, SME Member Since 1968
• Howard Weston, SME Member Since 1989

Oakland/Macomb Chapter 69 members:

• John Agapiou, PhD, FSME, SME Member Since 1981
• Gary Shepperd, SME Member Since 1998

Ann Arbor Chapter 79 members:

• Bob Heller, SME Member Since 1979
• Dave Steele, LSME, SME Member Since 1966

This milestone chapter anniversary ceremony was part of the SME Member Day held on May 18 at RAPID + TCT. SME members who stopped by the SME ZONE received a complimentary gift; a VIP breakfast; reserved seating at the keynote presentations, thought leadership panels and career development forum; lunch vouchers; and hors d'oeuvres, drinks and more during the member meet-up and networking session. The special chapter recognition ceremony capped off the day.
