Dear members,
I wish all of you a prosperous 2023! We can contribute to your success by offering program topics you need.  We are working hard to identify those. YOU CAN HELP! Please tell us what you want to see, hear, and learn.

Planning for four of the tracks is underway.

  • Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing in collaboration with Women in 3D Printing.
  • Continuous Improvement, a 5-part webinar series on TPS and KATA.
  • Collaboration with Student Chapters, including tours of their facilities and job fairs.
  • Robotics and Mechatronics

Hi Vesna:

I should also mention that we recently developed an online teaching simulation in digital transformation in manufacturing, based on a brake pad factory, which may also be of interest for the chapter. Happy to share a link to that with you privately if you, or others, would like to see it. It incorporates selection of operating system model (lean, agile, scientific management), technology choice and human and organizational factors and has received good reviews.

@Vesna Cota Hi Vesna - I would be happy to talk about this (not sure what a champion would do?) My focus is more implementation and exploitation of tools, rather than a high level of technical tool knowledge though…

@Vesna Cota thanks for this Vesna - I'll take a look.

  Hi Sanaa,
It is nice to learn about many manufacturing areas, but ultimately you want to APPLY what you learned. Tracks would offer you at least three events/year relevant to your principal interest. The rest of the program can then expand your knowledge in other areas.

 Hi Peter,
On another note, we strive to elevate our members' value proposition by establishing partnerships with the industry. An example: True North Thinking has two workshops on TPS and Toyota KATA coming up. Our Chapter members will enjoy the 10% off promo rate.

Dear Sanaa,

I'm looking for input about what you want to SEE, HEAR, and LEARN. Which topics are of interest for your career goals - in your case, it is a track on Aerospace.
But there may be more topics you may want to talk about.  Project management? Interview skills? Teamwork? Competitions? Special materials? Sustainability? Learning beyond the curriculum? Networking? Job fairs? Machining? Inspection? Health and Safety?

Relating to Aerospace: A few professional chapters with 2+ student chapters within the aerospace industry are already planning a collaborative track. I plan to include Women in Aerospace Canada (WIA-Canada). I have great hopes for that project. We use LinkedIn because our discussions include people who don't have access to connect.sme. Stay tuned.

In the meantime, feel free to share anything that comes to mind. If there is enough interest, and we have a champion to spearhead it, we will include it in our program.

Hi Peter,

Yes, absolutely. I am delighted and excited to have you engage with planning. One of the tracks I have in mind is the digital tools track. It would address CAD/CAM/CAE/PLM/MCAD/ECAD/PCB/BIM/digital twins, etc.
I just established contact with TraceParts. The free library may be helpful to students and for training purposes along with their intended audience.

Would you like to champion this track? Let's talk!

Hi Vesna:

These topics seem good. Over the past year I have developed a program on digital transformation with the University of Waterloo and the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers, which was successfully offered in the fall. It is focused on the challenges of successful digital change (70 % of transformation projects fail) and provides practical tools and advice - and is open to all. I'd be interested in a short discussion series for SME on this topic. Would you like to discuss this further?

Hello Vesna,
First I want to thank you for planning such an interesting program that might help a lot of students. Second, I don't know what are exactly the topics I have to consider when giving my suggestions but regarding what you posted, I believe that it would be great if we start by "Additive Manufacturing/3D Printing in collaboration with Women in 3D Printing." and "Collaboration with Student Chapters, including tours of their facilities and job fairs."
Also, Do you help international students to find jobs during summer break knowing that I am in aerospace manufacturing engineering technician program. I don't know if that is the right place to ask or not , but just in case you have any information it would be great.
Thanks,
Sanaa Bayi
