Manufacturing Day (MfgDay) is an annual event to celebrate the significance of American manufacturing and inspire the future workforce of the nation – students. This event is of prime importance to California, as the state is faced with the growing challenge of finding skilled workers to replace the retiring baby boomers. MfgDay 2019 was held at the California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) College of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) on Friday, October 4, 2019. The event was co-organized by CSUF SME student chapter S-282 (Faculty Advisor: Dr. Sagil James), SME Los Angeles/Orange County Chapter 233 (Chair: Gary Pangelina, Chair-Elect: David Rosenfield), CSUF Center for Collaborative Research and Prototype Development (CCRPD) (Directors: Dr. Kenneth John Faller II and Dr. Sagil James), and CSUF Partnership for Applied Computer Engineering (PACE) (Faculty Advisor: Dr. Kenneth John Faller II). Nathin Mabale (Administrative Support Coordinator, CSUF Mechanical Engineering Department) and Nancy Hernández-Guillén (ECS Events and Project Analyst) provided administrative and logistical support for the event. This year’s CSUF MfgDay 2019 event was attended by more than 150 people, including high school students from Troy Tech Magnet - Fullerton Joint Union High School District, West Covina High School, California Armenian Mesrobian School, and community college students from Long Beach City College. The event consisted of educational tours of manufacturing, engineering, and computer science research labs and facilities in the CSUF College of ECS. Throughout the event, the visiting students were exposed to cutting-edge engineering and manufacturing activities and were presented with the opportunities to engage with CSUF students and faculty from the College of ECS, who shared their stories and passion for manufacturing, engineering, and beyond. Lunch was provided for all the participants and the volunteers along with music in the ECS Quad area. Several ECS student clubs hosted tables at the event area to interact with the visiting students. Additionally, different departments in the college interacted with the visiting students and provided valuable information about their respective programs and exciting career opportunities.
With the firm belief that the skills shortage that California manufacturers are currently experiencing can be addressed through a conscious and coordinated effort on multiple fronts, the CSUF MfgDay 2019 organizers hope that this event will spark the younger generation to pursue manufacturing as a career.
