Chairman’s Message
Happy Holidays! And with the Holidays comes time to pass the Chairman position to the next in line, Joe
Vanstrom. Please join us at 6:00pm December 19th for a Hickory Park dinner at Torrent Brewing Company to
celebrate another year and wish Joe and his officer team success in their upcoming roles. Please plan to attend if
you wish to be an office for the Chapter as we will hold elections that evening. Significant others are welcome to
join. Please RSVP to my email and include the number that will attend (1 or 2) by December 16th. Catered
Hickory Park will be provided, and drinks will be for purchase from Torrent.
It has been my honor to be fill the role of Chair for the last 2 years. Brian Cobb relocated soon after I started as
Vice Chair, so I filled in during his year. During my time as Chair and acting Chair we have seen new friends join and
a few old friends pass. We had many firsts. We hosted the Midwest Round Table for the first time in over a
decade where multiple chapters joined in technical and networking conversations. We started a Facebook Page
and LinkedIn group. We had our first Family Picnic and a first (to my knowledge) chapter volunteer event to help
Marshalltown rebuild after the tornadoes.
I want to thank some very helpful cabinet members. First, thanks to John Howell for his strong support of Chapter
80 and the ISU student chapter. John secured many tours and offered excellent advice. I also want to thank Harry
Mundt for his continued support in updating the Chapter 80 webpage and sound guidance from a lifetime of
experience from being a chapter 80 member. I also want to thank Joe for stepping in and picking up the pieces
when I could not keep up.
It was an honor to serve in the same role as my grandfather, Robert Clemons, did more than 50 years
ago. As I reflect over the last 2 years, it humbles me to have led such a great organization. Very few groups offer
the opportunities this group does. It is fascinating seeing different organizations, their challenges, and their
successes. It is awesome there are so many companies and people in central Iowa that are passionate about
what they make. We are fortunate they open their doors to us and share their secrets. I urge all members to
attend the meetings and help support group.
I wish Joe and Kaylinn success as they become Chair and
Vice Chair.
Thank you all for your support and the opportunity to be
Chair,
Mike Butler
