Additive Manufacturing

I was mesmerized by the write-up from the guest editorial from the May 2024 Digest, which was about some expanding opportunities and challenges in the area of Additive manufacturing.

  • In what areas of manufacturing have we been implementing the green methodology, additive manufacturing?
  • What are the challenges we face in integrating additive manufacturing into our processes?
  • Please share any relevant resources available for additive manufacturing enthusiast to increase their knowledge to implement them in their industry.

Let's discuss, and share ideas and solutions we have used to solve AM challenges.

Its being done by aerospace. I'm sure you know much more. Jetting and additive is very useful. Adds new dimension to capabilities.

However, in picture tubing was ‘welded’ conventionally using filler wire!

@Paul Cheng

Are you saying, Material Jetting metals is a good idea?  Your answer was not clear to me.

The picture w/ parts ‘joined’ onto additive manufactured parts - there's not one response from students or professionals. Doesn't any member want to know or curious what the alternatives might be? A discussion how to improve or expand manufacturing capabilities etc.?

Enclose another part made w/ AD, joined using traditional methods. Reintroducing heat affected zone, residual stress etc.

Hi James: Cost of material is cheap. Rework is the restriction. Industry is using exotic metal power. Surface profile, stress cracks are some of the issues not resolved.

Would low cost Material Jetting be a good option for metal printing?

@Paul Cheng, It is still an innovation that is spreading out.  I think it will be more embraced if metals are used as materials for printing because several metallic intricate parts can be produced with additive manufacturing in such cases which are currently produced with CNC machining process

Dear Iyanuoluwa: AD / 3D is a radical new field to itself. But it needs to be incorporated into existing manufacturing systems. Too many articles espouse the virtues of AD / 3D w/ out any discussions re: shortfalls, work required to make 3D / AD parts usable.

ESA demonstrated viability of additive for welding in Space but extremely small deposits. Is it realistic for large structures? Also how are parts attached to additive manufactured components? The old fashion way - stick welding filler; re-introducing heat affected zone, stress etc.

At the recent FabTech, Chicago convention 2023, additive was a very small part of the welding floor. I was hoping there would be more.
