Develop your Communication Skills with SME
Approved 2
One of the largest complaints voiced by companies who hire engineers is that most engineers lack soft skills training. While obtaining our education, we often focus on technology and less on how to effectively communicate. As many of us have heard, it’s not what you say but how you say it.

To help improve your soft skills, SME and Toastmasters are offering a six-week training course (March 3, 17, 31; April 14, 28; and May 12; 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT) to provide 15 candidates* with the opportunity to grow as communicators and leaders, all while developing active listening talent.

Course Outline
Over six weeks, these 15 committed candidates will work with Toastmasters' Speechcraft instructors to develop the talent hidden in each of us: the skills of communication.

Skills developed:

•    Speaking skills
•    Listening skills
•    Body language
•    Vocal variety
•    Concise messaging
•    Improvisation speaking
•    Speechwriting

Materials provided:

•    Speechcraft workbook
•    Certificate of accomplishment

As each member cycles through different roles, speakers, evaluators, grammarian, Ah Counter, timing and other leadership roles, they will have an opportunity to speak a minimum of three times. Participants will also learn the value of speaking skills, listening skills, the importance of staying within time, being concise, speaking off the cuff in table topics and so on.

*All potential candidates (18 years and older) must apply to participate with 15 total being selected. Each selected candidate must commit to completing the entire six-week course.
