SME members from the College of Industrial Engineering at Mizzou went to Knoxville on Nov. 9th to take place in a machining competition. SME Chapter 287 helped support and fund this trip. The participants were tasked with designing a single cylinder pneumatic engine. Groups had to make three components: the piston block, the engine base, and the flywheel. They had to use Computer Aided Design (CAD) models to create a Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) process and program a machine to cut the parts, then assemble the engine. The SME students got third place in the competition!! Way to go! They learned valuable skills that will help them in the manufacturing world and created knowledgeable experience through this SME chapter. The SME 287 chapter promotes students like this to enhance real manufacturing experience.
