Chapter 81 - Call to Action

Published
Dear SME Chapter 81 Members,

Hello. I hope this letter finds you well. It has been a long time since you have received a communication from your Chapter 81 executive. We apologize for that. Due to the recent global pandemic, our executive has not met for nearly three years. Any sort of close contact networking activities were banned. That situation has now eased, many restrictions are lifted, and we are able to meet face to face.

On Friday October 28th, Steven Ly, our current Chair, organized a meeting with 4 past Chairs  (Eric Ward, Graham Salt, Karl Wolf & Viet Truong) to discuss the future of our chapter. We discussed the possibility of relinquishing our chapter charter, but voted unanimously to give it another go. We felt the general membership should be allowed to have their voice heard, a call to action. We have made this call in the past with little response from members. That was then. You now have a chance to participate in the course of direction of SME Chapter 81 Grand River Valley. Let your voice be heard.

For the interim, there has been a shuffle of the current executive. Karl Wolf now assumes the responsibility of Chapter Chair. We thank Steven Ly for his many years as Chapter Chair. Steven Ly will now assume the position of Secretary. Viet Truong remains as Chair-Elect, and Eric Ward remains as Treasurer and Graham Salt assumes Programs Director. We thank Eric, Graham, and Viet for the many years of continued support.

I remember when I began as an SME member, it was the best possible way to gain technical information, network with peers and look forward to plant tours. Much has changed since then. You can Google or YouTube anything from anywhere to investigate and solve problems. What has not changed, is the personal, one on one networking and friendships that can only be developed by in person gatherings. That is what I believe is worth preserving with Chapter 81. If you feel the same, or would like to plot a different course, we are happy to hear from you. We look forward to your responses.

Our next step is to plan another meeting, including our current executive team and welcoming anyone that feels they can contribute. The date is to be determined, based on the majority availability. Please advise Karl Wolf at kmwolf@sympatico.ca if you are interested.
