Edye  S. Buchanan  has an excellent article from October 2019  in the Manufacturing Engineering Magazine  focusing on WIIFM.   She has 32 year as a member in SME and has held a variety of volunteer positions.  In her article she sites  three main reasons people join.
1.Value Proposition-     Publications, videos, webinars  that provide cutting-edge technology related to manufacturing, and process improvement to solve problems
2. Networking-  finding new ways engage members and to share passion
3. To have an impact- to be able to give back, sharing knowledge and skills
